چکیده

Quanti-qualitative changes in Dinophysis and Alexatidrium populations from the Gulf of Venice NW Adriatic Sea were studied on a short time scale (44 h cycles). Under hydrographic conditions of marked thermo-haline stratification (July 1995), D. sacculus populations assembled in the surface waters (12 24 yt isopycnals). Division processes took place mostly in the early hours of the morning and at 14:00 h, 4 to 10 % of the population consisted of morphotypes of reduced size (possibly gametes resulting from successive cell divisions). Similar percentages were also observed in October for D. caudata, with a maximum division between 06:00 h and 10:00 h. During this month, coexisting populations of Alexandrium cf. fundyense and A. cf. tamarense dis played rhythmic changes in cell density that slightly differed from those exhi bited in July by A. pseudogonyaulax, suggesting a circadian control of the cell cycle rather than a response to hydrographic changes.

Ecological characterization of toxic phytoplankton species (Dinophysis spp., Dinophyceae) in Slovenian mariculture areas (Gulf of Trieste, Adriatic Sea) and the implications for monitoring.

Diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) events are often registered in Slovenian mariculture areas (Gulf of Trieste, Adriatic Sea) and are related to the occurrence of Dinophysis spp. The annual dynamic of this genus and succession of the most important species were studied at two shellfish farms during monitoring fieldwork in the period 1995-2003. Results indicate that the Dinophysis genus mainta...

Dinoflagellate toxins in northern Baltic sea phytoplankton and zooplankton assemblages

The distribution of dinoflagellate toxins (OA, DTXs, PTXs, YTXs) in plankton communities was studied in the northern Baltic Sea during late summers of 2005 and 2006. The phycotoxins were analysed from samples that contained field collected microplankton in the size range of 20–76 μm, zooplankton collected with a net, and individually hand-picked copepods from open-sea and coastal sampling stati...

Evolutionary transition towards permanent chloroplasts? - Division of kleptochloroplasts in starved cells of two species of Dinophysis (Dinophyceae)

Species within the marine toxic dinoflagellate genus Dinophysis are phagotrophic organisms that exploit chloroplasts (kleptochloroplasts) from other protists to perform photosynthesis. Dinophysis spp. acquire the kleptochloroplasts from the ciliate Mesodinium rubrum, which in turn acquires the chloroplasts from a unique clade of cryptophytes. Dinophysis spp. digest the prey nuclei and all other...

Preliminary study on vertical migrations of dinoflagellates in a dynamic coastal sea (Gulf of Trieste, northern Adriatic)

The purpose of this preliminary study was to define the vertical migration pattern in the dinoflagellate community in the shallow coastal sea. Migrations were followed in an area of mussel farming, through two 24-hour samplings, first during mixed and second during stratified water column conditions. Despite variable physical environment we were able to follow vertical migrations of some autotr...

Harmful Algae Records in Venice Lagoon and in Po River Delta (Northern Adriatic Sea, Italy)

A detailed review of harmful algal blooms (HAB) in northern Adriatic Sea lagoons (Po River Delta and Venice lagoon) is presented to provide "updated reference conditions" for future research and monitoring activities. In the study areas, the high mollusc production requires the necessity to identify better methods able to prevent risks for human health and socioeconomical interests. So, an inte...
